While getting this issue fixed on different devices we came across a few major reasons behind the discord screen share not working.

Full-screen mode: – As far I know currently Discord is not supporting screen share of any game and apps while in full-screen.
In order to share the screen, your game or program should be in windowed mode.
H.264 Hardware Acceleration Discord: – Hardware acceleration in discord is used for efficient video encoding to accelerate graphic and sound performance by using GPU.
If your PC or laptop is not up to the recommended requirement, discord screen share may not work and give a black screen or discord can lag as well.
Admin Rights: – You may go into this trouble even if there is permission conflict, let me make it clear with an example.
If you want to share your game in which you are playing with the admin permission, but your discord is not running with the admin rights then there may be a permission conflict.
Here, this may conflict and comes with many other problems.
I am sharing 8 top working methods to fix discord screen share with a black screen. Please have some patience and try every step one by one.
Before starting any of the below troubleshooting, kindly restart your computer and Discord which might fix the issue.
FIX 1:- Run Discord as Administrator
As discussed above in the reasons, you read there can be a conflict with permissions, if either between discord and game is not having admin rights.
Both the program here needs to be run as an administrator as you might not be sure whether both the programs are running with admin privileges or not.

Run Discord as administrator
Step 1:- Quit discord completely
Step 2:- Look for the Discord app on your desktop or from the search, right-click on it and choose run as administrator.
Run Game or Program as Administrator
Step 1:- Look for the game or program that you want to share
Step 2:- Right-click on the app and choose Run as administrator
FIX 2:- Run Compatibility Troubleshooter
Many programs and games may not function properly if they are having any compatibility issues, windows have compatibility feature which can help to resolve the problem.
Here, you can run compatibility troubleshooter for both discord and game to fix the discord screen share not working issues.
Run compatibility troubleshooter for Discord
Step 1:- Right-click on the discord icon and choose properties.
Step 2:- From the discord properties box, click on the compatibility tab.
Step 3:- Click on “Run compatibility troubleshooter box”, this will start detecting issues.

Step 4:- Once done, click on “Try recommended settings” and then on test settings.

Do the same for your game or program whichever you are trying to share
FIX 3:- Disable Latest Technology and Experimental Methods of Discord
“Use our latest technology to capture your screen” and “Use an experimental method to capture audio from application” are voice diagnostic features of Discord.
Enabling this feature may cause problem sharing discord screen and can be fixed by disabling it.
Follow the steps to disable this feature
Step 1:- Open the Discord dashboard and click on the user settings icon located at the very left-hand bottom.
Step 2:- From the settings window click on Voice & Video from the left-hand side.

Step 3:- Scroll down to the bottom to Voice Diagnostic and disable the feature of “Use our latest technology to capture your screen” and “Use an experimental method to capture audio from application” by clicking on the blue toggle.
Step 4: Once done restart your PC to see the changes.
FIX 4:- Switch to Windowed Mode
If you are trying to share a program or game in full-screen, let me tell you as of now discord doesn’t allow full-screen sharing.
Try switching to the windowed mode which probably fixes the discord screen share and black screen issues.
Switch the program or game to windowed mode and verify with your partner that is he still getting the black screen.
You can use the Alt + Enter key to switch the game to windowed mode, in case if this doesn’t work for any game, perform below settings.
Step 1:- Launch the game and go to Display/ Video settings of the game.
Step 2:- Find the display mode option and click on it.
Step 3:- Select Windowed mode from the option, click on save, and restart the game.
FIX 5:- Disable H.264 Hardware Acceleration
H.264 hardware acceleration in Discord is used to accelerate the graphics and sound performance through the device hardware like the graphic card.
But, in case if your device hardware is not capable enough to accelerate the graphics, this may turn into a problem like a black screen mostly in windows 10.
You can try disabling hardware acceleration with the help of the following steps
Step 1:- Open the Discord dashboard and click on user settings located at the left-hand bottom.
Step 2:- From the left-hand bard scroll down to find “Voice & Video” and click on it.
Step 3:- Now scroll down to find “H.264 hardware acceleration” and click on the blue toggle to turn it off.

If it’s already off, you can try enabling it just to see it helps.
Step 4:- Once done restart your PC to see the changes.
FIX 6:- Clear Discord Cache
This is how I fixed my problem by clearing the discord cache on my windows pc. We know cache memory is to load our content faster as it stores all the browsing and activities.

Step 1:– Type %APPDATA%/Discord/Cache in the RUN box and hit Enter.

Step 2:– Roaming folder of discord cache will now come up, press Ctrl + A to select all files, and then Shift + Del to delete all the files.
Step 3:– Restart the computer now to see the changes.
FIX 7:- Update Graphics Driver
An outdated or faulty graphic driver can be another cause of discord screen share not working with a black screen on windows 10.
Your computer graphic card should be updated from time to time in order to avoid such issues.
The graphic driver can be updated by the following steps
Step 1:- Press Windows + R key open the RUN box on the computer.
Step 2:- Type devmgmt.msc in the Run box and click on ok.

Step 1:- Type appwiz.cpl in the search or the run box and hit enter to open programs and features.
Step 2:- Look for Discord, right-click on it, and choose to uninstall.
Step 3:- The process will now be started and once done restart the computer.
Step 4:- Visit the discord official website again to download the Discord desktop app again and share the screen again to see the changes.
Why am I getting Discord Black Screen on Start-up
You may run into the problem while running the discord app on the computer with a black screen on start-up.
Discord may work fine on other devices like on your phone, but it doesn’t seem to be working on the computer.
The only solution I found is closing the discord completely from the device. You can do this by following steps.
Step 1:- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc key from your keyboard to bring the task manager up
Step 2:- Look for all the discord files and services running in the Apps and Background process and quit all the files by clicking on the end task.
Step 3:- Make sure you closed every file and services of discord, once done restart the computer again.
